Stuck Inside? Kids saying they don’t know what to do? We’ve got just the thing! As part of the Indoor Activity Hop for Older Kids, we are excited to share one of our favorite games for indoor play, pom pom races!
Boredom Buster Game | Pom Pom Races
Pom pom races can be played at any age {our toddler loved trying}, but it especially fun with older kids that can problem solve through challenges a little more. We’ve played these races on a table before, but this time we wanted to make the game a little more challenging by getting down on the floor and adding a few obstacles.
Materials for Pom Pom Races
Pom- Poms {we used at least 2 different colors- one for each player}
Painter’s Tape {Optional}
Directions for Playing Pom Pom Races
1) Start by creating shapes on the floor with painter’s tape. If you do you not have room for this, or do not have a hard floor, you can mark your space with string, or use a line.
Game 1: Each player tries to get their color pom pom into the shape they decide before starting. They can only use their straw and not their hands. Game plays until everyone gets their pom-poms into the shapes. There is no winner or loser, just fun.
Game 2: Beat the Clock. This time, play the game the same way, but set a timer and each player races to beat their timer with all their pom poms.
Game 3: Obstacle Races. In this game, each player has to try to get their pom poms to their home base by going around obstacles set on the floor such as cups, blocks, books, army men (whatever your heart desires).
Game 4: Suck and Drop. In this game the players have to suck through the straws to pick up their pom poms and drop them in their shapes.
These games are excellent sensory support for any child. They are great as a break from homework, a calm down method or even as a fun game night activity. Using the straws develops their oral motor skills, self regulation, and oral sensory processing while getting down on the floor provides amazing vestibular and proprioceptive input!
