I am excited to be part of the Booking Across the USA collaborative blogging project. Over 50 bloggers have teamed up to highlight activities and crafts related to our great 50 states. I’m excited to share about the great state of Hawaii!
When I first heard about this project, I was so excited to join in. I was even more excited when I found out that I was going to get to represent Hawaii. Two years ago, Papa Bear and I went to Maui and Kauai for our honeymoon and ever since the boys (ages 6 and 8) have been obsessed with knowing any and everything about the state.
We were inspired by the book “Way Out West” from the Travels with Charlie series by Miles Backer and illustrated by Chuck Nitzberg. Blue Apple Books published this book as part of a four book series (Midwest,West, Northeast and South).
The book is filled with history, trivia facts, bright landmark illustrations while playing “look and find” with a little picture of Charlie the dog somewhere on each state page spread. Bones (6) couldn’t put the book down.
Hawaii Inspired Rock Building Challenge
After we read about Charlie and Hawaii, we took a trip to the Library and checked out more books about Hawaii. The boys just couldn’t get enough. Surprisingly, one of the things my boys were the most intrigued about were the rocks stacked along the beach. The couldn’t wait to attempt this on their own.
I am sad to say that when I went to write this post, my hard drive crashed and this is the only picture I was able to save. I hope to update this post as soon as I can get my files recovered. In the meantime, I am leaving you with some ideas the boys had for more activities on Hawaii.

Just stumbled across your blog from Pinterest. Thanks for sharing all your ideas!
Great! So nice to “meet” you!
Can see why the rock stacks would appeal to your boys. Will have to look into why these are found along the beaches of Hawaii.
Thank you for all the other links. Always like exploring new resources.
Thank you! Can’t wait to come check out your work and resources too!
Again, so sorry about your computer! Neat how you tied this in ~ I always imagined pristine white and miles and miles of sand – but no rocks. Cool to know!
Ah you are too sweet. I was surprised by the rocks as well. We had so much fun learning about them.
Oh no! So sorry to hear you lost all your photos 🙁 Hopefully you can recover them and didn’t loose any important ones!
We love Hawaii! My husband and I got married on the beach in Oahu and added to a few rock cairns on our hiking trips there!
Thank you. I did find my photos on my camera, so I hope o update this post later with fun facts, and better images.
Thanks for putting this post together during such a busy time in your life. My boys would love this activity! Thank you for being part of Booking Across the USA!
