DIY Harry Potter Potions Ornaments

Have I told you lately that my boys are obsessed with Harry Potter? I’m pretty sure most kids are at this age, but still the love is something I’ve never seen before. Our oldest son has listened to all of the audio books and has seen 4 of the movies (he is working through them slowly). When I asked him about his favorite book to make an ornament for 10 Days of Kid Made Ornaments, I was not surprised when he shouted he wanted to make something for Harry Potter. What could be more fun than making DIY Harry Potter Potions into ornaments!

Everyone knows that one of the coolest things about Harry Potter are the potions and spells. My kids are obsessed with these and couldn’t wait to get started!

Making the Harry Potter potions as ornaments was pretty easy too!

Harry Potter Potions and Uses

Polyjuice Potion | This potion is made by putting in one item from the person/creature you want to turn into. It allows you turn into whoever/whatever you desire.

Felix Felicis Potion | Also known as “Liquid Luck”, this potion is meant to be used sparingly. This potion makes the person drinking it lucky for a period of time, during which everything they attempt will be successful.

Veritaserum | The perfect truth serum. This potion is meant to force the drinker to answer any questions asked of them truthfully.

Amortentia | This is the most powerful love potion around. This potion causes the person drinking it to have a strong obsession or infatuation.

These are just a few of the potions from Harry Potter. You might enjoy checking out this awesome list of potions. In addition, please note that I know that some of these aren’t the “perfect” appearance and I do not claim to be any sort of wizard. These are simply approximations. Please don’t cast a spell on me if they are not perfect .

Making the potions is the best part! We had a blast making each of our potions and seeing them come to life.

How to Make Polyjuice Potion

While there is no distinct color for the real Polyjuice potion, it is generally shown as green. We decided to make ours green as well.

We started by adding warm water to the ornament and colored it with green food coloring.

Then add a small bottle of glitter glue (green) to the warm water. Finally fill the ornament the rest of the way with more warm water.

Harry Potter Polijuice Potion

Just as you will do with the other potions, cover the top of the ornament with a towel and shake until the glitter glue is dissolved.

Put the lid on and set aside for later (when you will hot glue the lid closed).

How to make Felix Felicis Potion

Harry Potter Felix Felicus Potion

Again, we know there is not a definite color for Felix Felicis but we have always seen it shown as yellow/gold. Following the same instructions as you did with the Polyjuice, do the same with this potion.

DIY Harry Potter Potions Craft

We like putting the glue into warm water so that it starts to break down immediately.

Once you have the ornament filled with water, shake again!

How to Make  Veritaserum

Veritaserum by nature is colorless and odorless but that is not a fun ornament to make, so we decided to make it a little glittery with white glitter glue and extra glitter.

Harry Potter Homeade Potions

Follow exactly the same instructions as above!

How to make Amortentia Potion

Amortentia is known for having a mother of pearl sheen. While this color isn’t exactly mother of pearl, it is very shiny and shimmery.

Harry Potter Amortentia Potion

We followed the same set of instructions, yet again to make this potion. However, we did not color the water with any extra coloring.

We added a lot of extra white shimmery glitter to make the mother of pearl sheen.

Now that you have all of your potions made, it is time to print out the labels and make sure they don’t leak on your tree! We have made the printables so they print on a 5×6 paper but you can print more than one if you want. We also left 2 more labels in case you wanted to make your favorite potion. We really wanted to make Gillyweed and we might still do that if we have time.

Important! When you hot glue the lid, make sure you cover all of the holes in the lid before you apply it to the ornament. For safety we even went back and added even more hot glue around the edges! You can’t have too much hot glue.

Hi! Does the glitter glue make them solid or more stable, or are they still liquid in the balls?

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

They are still liquid. It makes the glitter not just sit at the bottom when you shake it!

      1. Chevymisty

I have tried so hard to keep the glitter from settling at the bottom and it just sits at the bottom. I’ve used half a bottle of glue in an effort to keep this from happening. Is it just inevitable?

        1. Lemon Lime Adventures

Yes. It will settle. That is the fun part to shake it back up again.

    I love these!

Just so you know Felix Felicia DOES have a defined color. It’s described as molten gold in color, so your ornament is perfect!

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

Thank you so so much! I tried to make sure I was right on as many os possible!

  9. Adia

I’m 32 and I love this! I’m a much bigger fan than my 9 year old so we will be doing this over the weekend! ^_^

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

AWesome! Let me know how they turn out! Be warned the lids are can take some problem solving on your part! 😉

  10. Jimmey

These are so cool! I’ll have to show my daughter. There is a pearlescent paint you can get from Hobby Lobby, Walmart, or probably anywhere that sells acrylic paints. When you add it to water, it will give the Mother of Pearl look. You may not even need the glue with it.

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

Thank you ! We will have to try that!

  11. I cannot tell you how much I love this idea!! We’re huge Harry Potter fans, and your printables are adorable!

  12. Jamie Halbig

I was so excited when I saw these and rushed out to give them a try right away. However, mine did not turn out very well at all… they look nothing like yours and I’m very disappointed. I’ve been a PotterHead since I was a child. I followed your directions to a “T” but these just didn’t work out for me. 🙁

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

I am so sorry to hear this! What happened to yours?

  13. Cindy

I love these. Will they only be good for the year they are made? I mean I am guessing we can’t keep them year after year. Going to make them anyways. Just wondering. Thanks.

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

I kept mine to try again next year. I just stored them upright 🙂 We will see next Christmas if they stood up!

  14. Sami

I love these but my question is, won’t the water evaporate over time?

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

When we have made sensory bottles like these the water never evaporated, but they might in these if you don’t get the top covered completely.

  15. Becca

So, I hate to be picky, but polyjuice potion is described as a thick muddy brown that slowly bubbles, until the final ingredient (the bit of person) is added, upon which the potion changes again to just about any variation one can imagine.
So, in theory, your green polyjuice can just be *after* you’ve added a bit of whomever you’re morphing into.

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

Thank you so much for clearing that up! I did state that this color is after adding something to my polyjuice potion and this is what we picture it to look like.

  16. Deidre

How did you a fix the labels to the ornaments?

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

We just used a glue stick.

  18. John Bailey

I love this idea and I am making potion bottles for my daughter for Christmas. I would like to use the two blank labels that came with the other 4 labels that were filled out but the Adobe form that they are in is not a form that will allow a person to add text. I have the version of Adobe that will let me edit Adobe forms if they are fillable. Do you have any suggestions on what I might do to use the blank labels? Printing them out and handwriting them would not look right with the other four labels.
    Thank you.
    John Bailey

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

You can load them to a program that allows you to add the text on the labels. Unfortunately I haven’t figured out how to make editable PDFs. If I do I can let you know. If you email me, I can probably make the labels you need.

Thank you for sharing your idea. I made some of these yesterday but instead of using clear glass ornaments (baubles) I used small corked bottles. They turned out great!

Also I have some info for the lady that says her glitter keeps settling at the bottom of the ornament…. it matters what the ratio of water to glitter glue you use. I discovered this by accident. I thought I liked the thinner consistency (more water to glue) but found that the ones that were equal parts or slightly more glue to water stayed “mixed” longer. Thus the glitter stayed suspended in the liquid longer.

Doesn’t the water leak out when storing the ornaments since there are little holes on top of the cap?

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

Not if you use A LOT of hot glue 😉

Hi! These are beautiful and I need to make them. I only have one question: aren’t they terribly heavy for hanging on the tree?
