I have wanted to make edible jelly bean playdough for two years and never seem to get around to it. This year, I was determined to get ahead of the game and make something we could all play with.
Edible Jelly Bean Playdough Recipe
Materials Needed for Edible Jelly Bean Playdough
10-20 Jelly Beans (any kind will do)
1/4 cup Water
3 cups Powdered Sugar
1 tbs Coconut oil
How to Make Edible Jelly Bean Playdough
Before you can even get started, you have to sort and prep your jelly beans. Take it from us when we tell you we tried everything before we decided on this method. We tried putting the jelly beans in the microwave with nothing else… don’t do that!
Then, we tried adding 1/4 cup water to our cup with 10-20 jelly beans. We microwaved for 20 seconds and got a really nice colored water.
We should have stopped there, but we tried to use coconut oil instead of the water to nix the water and lower the amount of liquid we used. Yep… that didn’t work either. The oil and sugar never mix.
So, the end story is… add 1/4 cup water to a glass or bowl with about 20 jelly beans and microwave for 30 seconds. Strain the jelly beans out of the liquid and set aside.
Add 2 cups of powdered sugar to a bowl and pour your jelly bean liquid and 1 tbs of coconut oil on top. Stirring as you go. Once it is well mixed, add more cups of sugar 1/4 cup at a time until it is the perfect consistency.
If you find the dough is too wet, simply add more powdered sugar.
Once you have the perfect consistency, you can roll the dough and knead it until it is smooth. Now it is perfect for play time and loads of sensory input!
Playing with Our Edible Jelly Bean Dough
I am not exaggerating when I say the kids LOVED this playdough. Between wanting to eat the whole bowl and loving the texture, my kids were sold!
You can use the dough for molding, creating, or even just free play.
Without any promting, Legoman decided to work on fine motor skills by hiding and searching for hidden treasures in the dough.
