Galaxy Salt Dough

Welcome back for another month of  12 Months of Sensory Dough Recipes where several bloggers get together to share the exciting sensory dough recipes and a variety of twists and turns.  It is our hope that you will have a one-stop resource for all things Sensory dough! This month we are featuring a huge list of salt doughs from No-Cook to Microwaved and everything in between. We had a blast making galaxy salt dough as out little experiment!

Simple Galaxy Salt Dough Recipe

If you are a regular here you know just how much my boys love space and science. In fact, my oldest (10) has said he wants to be a rocket engineer since he was 3 years old (no kidding) . So when I asked them what we should do today when we made salt dough, they suggested galaxy salt dough. I have to say, I wasn’t sure how it would turn out!

I like to keep things simple, so this recipe is one that anyone can do! The ingredients are things you should have on hand and if you don’t have the perfect glitter or beads, you could definitely substitute.

Making Galaxy Salt Dough

Starting with a super simple recipe that we perfected last year, we made our favorite salt dough recipe. The only variation we made was substituting the water for colored water.

November Salt Dough

Making the galaxy salt dough was super easy and super fun. It took about 5 minutes total, but has been hours of fun for fine motor practice and proprioceptive input for the boys. (more on that later)

After you have made your two batches of Simple Salt Dough and dyed them blue and purple, you are ready to create your galaxy. This galaxy was made following the instructions of my boys, so you might end up with a different variation and that is okay.

We started by mixing our two batches together until we got a “galactic swirl”. Now we were ready to add the stars (glitter) and the planets (beads) .

The pictures just don’t do this the most justice! You would probably like the video the most! We had so much fun making it!

The best part about salt dough is that it can be baked. However, we haven’t had a chance to try it out yet. We loved the texture and the feel and have stored the dough in our refrigerator so we can make some galaxies tomorrow.  Who knows, maybe we will pop some in the oven (even if we know the beads will melt. )

Would you call this recipe and activity a success or a fail? Would you try this recipe or have you tried another? We want to see! You can share pictures to Facebook, Instagram, TwitterorGoogle+. Tag your pictures with #ilovesensorydough.

Be sure to check out each blogger, as we will each provide a different take on the dough, some of us with have the BEST recipe ever, while others (probably me) will show you our attempts (both failed and successful)
