The Grinch’s Guide to Activities and Lessons

Grinch

The other day did not start out very well at our homeschool. Super B was sick all night the night before and I had a fever. It wasn’t pretty. I had so many things on my “To Do” list for the boys, including our Advent Calendar activities we were already behind on. I knew I didn’t have it in me to make snow globes or cookies. That’s when I had an idea.

Christmas Movie Marathon Day

I felt guilty, though. I was supposed to teach my children. I was responsible for their learning. I couldn’t call in a substitute. That guilt caused me to plan a Book study based on a Christmas movie. What better movie to choose, than…

How the Grinch Stole Christmasgrinch

I did a quick search of other bloggers that had done Grinch activities and planned the day in less than 20 minutes.

Reading:

  • Read How the Grinch Stole Christmas
  • Watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original)
  • Discuss the movie and ask comprehension questions
  • Draw the Main Characters on Tri-fold paper

No one liked the Grinch smoothies. The boys thought they were too plain and Papa Bear said they were too sweet. I couldn’t win.

Everyone had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and we called it a day.

All in all the day turned out really well, considering everyone was under the weather.

The boys got to watch 2 versions of The Grinch and another Christmas movie. They had fun. They learned. And no one got hurt.

In the end, I think I was a pretty good substitute that day.

Have you ever had a day that started out wrong and you didn’t know how you would get through it? What did you do to get through it? I would love to hear!

  1. It’s days like this that make me so excited to homeschool! Sounds like you guys had a great time and the kids got plenty of learning in! 🙂

    1. Thank you for those words of encouragement. On days like these I have to remind myself that if they were at school and their teacher was absent, they would probably not have done as much. It had such a relaxed feel to the day, too. Which is always nice.

  2. I love theme days that go well. We had some in the past that worked out great. We love How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

We have always watched “The Grinch” and I love the book. Beside the Grinch and The Who’s of Whoovile, I loved Dog when Grinch put -antlers on him. ( okay I have spelled Whooville wrong). Great ideas for Homeschooling.

    I hope all feel better!
