In our home, we LOVE science. We love simple science, complex science, science in the kitchen and science outside. Okay, I think you get the point. We love science. In the past we have done several experiments with dish soap, but we had never done the magic milk experiment until recently. I have heard from friends that this experiment can be tricky and doesn’t always work, but I am here to report just how easy it was with Palmolive Dish Soap. In fact, it was so easy, we tried it while we were out of town visiting our friends with toddlers and preschoolers.

What You Need:

There are so many uses for dish soap that have nothing to do with washing dishes. In fact, the magic milk demonstration is just one of many experiments and sensory activities we have tried with palmolive dish soap! We loved doing this experiment so much, that we did it with our toddler and preschool friends, at home as an independent activity and at our mad science birthday party with 10 5-12 year olds. Every time this experiment has been uber successful, and I think it would be even if we did it again!

Many Uses of Palmolive

This demonstration is so easy to do, we even did it on our trip to visit friends this last week. We just hopped in the car, headed to Walmart and picked up a bottle of Palmolive dish soap for an entire evening of fun. For only $1 we were able to pick up a bottle that will last us for months to come for fun science and sensory experiences.

How to Demonstrate Magic Milk:

Since I was working with toddlers and preschoolers, I got all my goods set up ahead of time while they played in the other room. I set each ingredient on the table and made it look inviting and interesting. Before no time at all, all of the children were at the table asking to join in the fun.

1. Start by pouring milk into the plater or dish. I like to use just enough to cover the plate.

2. Next add a few drops of food coloring in any order to your tray. For the sake of the preschoolers, we just put a few different colors and didn’t get too fancy. When I share what they boys did later this week, you will see just how artsy you can get!

3. Finally, use a Q-tip to drip dish soap into the tray. TIP: Do NOT swirl it in the milk, let it just drip. (This is especially hard for preschool and it is okay if they do the touching… the focus of the observations will just vary slightly).

4. Lastly, watch in amazement!

With the addition of the Palmolive soap, the colors will seem to dance around, mixing and avoiding each other at the same time. Think of a milky kaleidoscope!
