Magically Endless DIY Lego Fidget Cube for Kids That Can’t Sit Still

If you have ever met my kid, you know that he never sits still. And on the off chance his body is still, his fingers are still constantly on the move. We learned long ago, that one of the most effective ways to help him calm his busy fingers, is to hand him a fidget. We’ve used everything from fidget spinners to DIY fidget hacks from things in around our house. The truth is, he needs something in his hands and we will never stop finding things to use to help him. His desire and need to fidget is probably one of the reasons he loves Lego so much, which led to this awesome DIY Lego Fidget Cube that seems to be magically endless.

Now, I know there is a huge debate on fidget spinners in the classroom and the overall effectiveness of fidgets. I won’t get into all that right now, but know that I am on the side of the fence that thinks the world would be a better place if we quit finding all the things WRONG with what our kids are doing.

For now, I want to focus on the awesomeness of this Lego fidget cube. We made a simple Lego fidget cube a few weeks ago and what we love most about it, is anyone can make it with any piece they own. This one is different. After seeing this video on Youtube, he had to try to make it himself. This one never seems to stop transforming. It is an endless puzzle that my kiddo can’t seem to put down. He loved getting his fingers wrapped up in this project!

Take 1 cross block and turn it so that it looks like a “w”. Insert a pin with center slot into the hole on the left side. Slide another cross block of the same color over the pin. Turn second cross block so that it looks like a “c”.

Attach a beam to the opening of the “c” shaped cross block with an axle. Turn the block over and slide another axle partially into the “w” shaped cross block. Do not push the axle all the way through because you will be attaching blocks.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 using the both red and blue pieces until you have 4 blocks. You should have two red and two blue.

Create 4 more block like you did in step 1 – 2, except this time turn the first cross block so that it looks like a “m”, the second cross block will still look like a “c” when you attach it.

You should have 8 blocks total, four that make an “m” shape and four that make a “w” shape.

Connect the blocks to make two lines of four blocks. Alternate connecting “w” and “m” blocks. Try to keep the connecting pieces face up so that you can form straight lines.

When you have two straight lines, set them side by side and connect the ends. Your Yoshimoto cube fidget is now complete. Just fold and keep folding it to watch the endless magic.

The pictures just don’t even do this fidget cube justice. The way it opens, turns and moves is so much fun (think Jacob’s ladder). There is constant twisting and fidgeting possibilities, what’s not to love?

Check out our video on Facebook and share it with others if you think this is as awesome as we think it is :).

There are tons of other options out there if you are in the mood to try fidgets but want to stay clear of a fad. I plan to write a whole list, but for now here are a few to get you started!
