Quick and Easy Game Day Recipes for Kids

Does your family celebrate game day? My kids are probably bigger football fans than me so I thought it would be a nice treat to set up a “Game Day Kids’ Table” with these simple and fun Game Day Recipes for Kids. With the help of our partners at Jose’ Ole’ we’ve come up with the perfect chance for the kids to eat, play games, and watch the game.

This easy Game Day Spread is a balanced approach – combining easy real food from José Olé along with homemade salsa and chocolate smoothies – letting your kids have a fun meal without having to worry about them bouncing off of the walls from sugar.

This Big Game Spread works easily well for just your family or for a party – either way, it’s quick and easy with fun little touches that build up excitement for the kids before the game even begins.

What You’ll Need to Create Your Own Game Day Table

  • Football field tablecloth
  • Disposable plates
  • Football glasses
  • Cute paper straws
  • Washi or duct tape
  • Scissors
  • Serving platters
  • Jose’ Ole’ Mexican snacks

Adding details like a black and white striped napkin (for a referee reference), table scatter in your team colors, or even mini footballs for the kids to decorate are all fun bonuses that you can add to your table with little additional effort.

After the kids are done eating, you can clear the table and use that cool tablecloth to play games – like paper football, bottle flipping, etc.

If you can’t find football glasses like we used, brown cups with white washi tape “lacing” would be super cute.

Football Game Day Straws for Kids

To make the flag straws, I simply cut three lengths of tape and taped them onto the top of the straw. I used sharp scissors to cut the square flags into triangles – and for a special touch you could put the initials for your team on the little flags.

These straws are also a great way to keep tabs on who’s drink is who’s – putting each child’s initials on their flags. A cute and easy DIY thats cut down disagreements or germ-swapping is a win-win in my books.

Creating Simple and Fun Game Day Recipes for Kids

For the menu, I used José Olé Taquitos and Mini Tacos to save myself time on the big day and spent my time instead whipping up some non-spicy homemade salsa and a thick chocolate smoothie that easily passed as a milkshake.

How to Make Homemade Salsa for Kids

First, gather your ingredients:

  • 2 cups diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 white onion
  • 2-3 cloves garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • Handful cilantro
  • 1-2 teaspoons lime juice
  • Salt, pepper, cumin, optional, to taste

Simply combine all ingredients – except the salt, pepper and cumin – in a food processor or blender and puree for one minute. You can make the texture even finer or puree for less time for a chunky salsa. This middle ground is perfect for my kids.

Taste and adjust the quantities until you reach the perfect flavor.

I didn’t use salt, pepper or cumin for my kids’ salsa, but I like to add it for my own so I left it as optional in case your kids like a bit of extra flavor.

This salsa recipe can be prepared up to a week before and keeps well in the fridge for about a month.

How to Make a Thick Chocolate Smoothie

First, gather your ingredients:

  • 1 cup plain greek yogurt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 banana

Puree all ingredients together until thick and smooth.

If your kids are used to sweet smoothies, you can add a tablespoon of honey but it’s not necessary as this smoothie is delicious all on it’s own.

The smoothies are best to prepare just before getting started – make them as the taquitos and tacos are baking up in the oven.

Football Shake for Kids

This fun game day table spread and our easy, healthy game day recipes took no time but went a long way with involving the kids in our Game Day celebrations.

I love creating special traditions that are easy to keep up while making our everyday adventures more memorable, and I’m looking forward to many more years of celebrating Game Day with my kids and delicious food.

José Olé products use tender cuts of meat, real cheese, oven-baked tortillas, and authentic seasonings and spices to create delicious food that passes as homemade. You can serve them as-is like we did, or incorporate them into even more elaborate meals and snacks.
