Simple Sensory Play | Icy Alphabet I Spy

Welcome back for day 6 of simple sensory play with ice! So far we have shared a tactile ice bin vestibular ice toss, a scented ice lab, an ice relay game and a sound lab. Today we will share Visual play ideas you can try today! Sensory play is such an important part of early childhood. Not only can it be vital in speech, language, and cognitive development, it also plays a key role in helping children organize their world and allows them to integrate the input to develop a healthy sensory system. That is why I am excited to part of the Sensory Play Blog Hop, hosted by my new favorite blog, Sensory Activities for Kids. My goal is to bring you simple sensory play by using the same material throughout the whole series.  One material for 7 activities engaging 7 sensory systems.

Benefits of  Visual Sensory Play

The Visual Sense is responsible for a child’s sense of sight. However, not only does this sense relate to a child’s ability to see but also their ability to process the input in their environment. It allows them to track, find and understand what they are seeing. It allows them to distinguish differences in textures, color, and size, focus on objects in a crowded space and decipher variations in lines, shapes, and formations. The Visual sense is directly related to a child’s ability to attend and focus and understand what they are seeing or reading.

Visual play provides an opportunity for a child to learn variations in textures and size, learn visual tracking, and learn to focus on a task when they are visually stimulated by other input surrounding them.

Visual play is the foundation for tasks such as reading, writing, visual tracking, comprehension, and so much more.

Instructions for this Simple Sensory Play

Setup for this play idea is simple and easy. We simply filled a flat tray with ice and then dumped the bags of beads and letters on top. I set out the tray as an invitation to play with an empty tray beside it.

Bones (6) immediately set to work to find the letters of his name. He loved using the tweezers for added fine motor practice.

Simple Sensory Play with Ice

For this simple sensory play idea, your children could use tweezers, their hands or scoops to grab the letters. You can have them search for certain letters, match letter, or build words. This can be adapted for all ages.

Bones had a blast finding the little hearts, making simple sentences and making names from our family.

The important thing to remember about any sensory play is to gauge it, monitor your child, and assess what your child responds well too. You might need to adjust the material you play with, the time you play, or the method of play. The main goal is to have fun while providing your child with important sensory input.

Did you know sensory play could be so easy and so beneficial? It doesn’t have to take expensive materials and complex plans to make it work.
