Super Simple Lego Seed Starters

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Miracle-Gro Gro-ables for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Well, spring is here and we are itching to plant our garden! After such a crazy winter we just can’t wait to get started! We’ve teamed up with Miracle-Gro® Gro-ables Project to share this awesome solution for starting seeds indoors and getting your garden started while mixing in our favorite thing on earth… Lego! These simple Lego seed starters are the perfect science activity for any age and make great gifts!

Lego Seed Starters

As much as I love gardening, I have to say, I have always had a brown thumb. I like to tell people that I pretend to be good with plants (only because I garden every season) but really I am just trudging along looking for simple tricks. Before now, I have never started seeds inside because I was pretty sure I would kill them and they wouldn’t grow. However, with the Miracle-Gro®’s Gro-ables Project  you can’t go wrong. Each seed pod is super simple to use (easy enough for me and my kids) and guaranteed to grow! Sounds like a win-win for everyone. Since we love Lego so much, we decided to give our first seed starters a try with a fun Lego creation.

How to Make Lego Seed Starters

Lego Gro-ables Planters

What You Need:

Miracle-Gro® Gro-ables pods (They come in tons of varieties: Cucumber, Spinach, Basil, Peppers, Cilantro and Tomatoes)
Lego Longs (any size 1x pieces)
2 Square Lego Bases with holes
2 small Lego square flat pieces
Potting Mix
Water
Optional:
Measuring Tape
Charting Paper to Chart Growth

Building Your Lego Seed Starter Planter

Building Lego Planter

Start your Lego seed starting planter by building a base with two square flats with holes in them. If you don’t have one of these, you can alternate rectangle pieces to create the holes yourself. We added small solid squares on the bottom to cover some of the holes so the water would stay in the planter as much as possible but have a way to drain (see… I know something about planting, just not a ton).

Then start building walls around your rectangle, building until your walls are as tall or taller than theMiracle-Gro® Gro-ables seed pod. Now that your planter is made, you are ready to plant your guaranteed to grow seeds!

Planting your seed starters…

Now, comes the fun part. Using a little bit of potting mix, loosely add in some more potting mix to the bottom of your planter and cover the base. Once you have potting mix covering the bottom, you can pull the sides off your seed pod (this makes it fit better in the rectangle) and remove the label. Gently push the pod down in the potting mix and surround it with more loosely packed potting mix until it is level with the seed pod. Do not cover the Miracle-Gro® seed pod with potting mix. It will grow on it’s own. With a little bit of water and sun you will be amazed how quickly your seeds start to grow and turn into a real plant (about 2-3 weeks). Growable Lego Planter As with any seed starter set, you need to be able to transport them into the garden easily. (I try to pay attention when my neighbor gives me pointers). That’s where this Lego seed starter container comes in super handy! Once your plant is nice and sturdy and there is no more risk of frost, you can get your plant moved outdoors and let them flourish.

The Lego container breaks apart rather easily, making it a great transition to the garden! And guess what…Miracle-Gro® Gro-ables make sure that your seeds will grow! Its a winning combo for sure! Miracle-Gro®, believes that there’s a lot to learn from even the smallest plants. They started the Gro-ables Project : a movement to share the joy of growing herbs and veggies while giving kids truly hands-on learning experiences.  Join them by planting your own Gro-ables today!
