Summer is a time for outdoors, a time to run around and a time to for kids to use their energy to think up crazy contraptions. When I think of summer, I think of all the awesome summer engineering projects for kids that are possibilities, not to mention the ones the kids haven’t even begun to think of yet.
If you are a regular here, you know just how much we love all things engineering. In fact, you might say we are obsessed. Today I have gathered up our top 10 favorite engineering projects for kids. Some of them we have tried and some are on our must try list, either way we think you will love them just as much as we do!

Gather your containers and your recycled pieces for the classic egg drop project! Your kids will love engineering egg drop projects that work (and some that don’t).
We have always wanted to make a catapult! The summer is the perfect time to try making a catapult that launches paint! I mean, how cool is that?
Every kid likes bubbles, but wouldn’t it be even cooler if they got to turn those bubbles into engineering projects? I love these tensile bubbles and we are for sure adding this to our must try list!
One of our favorite spots in our yard each summer is our tinkering station. Its easy to make and the possibilities are endless.
Another project we have never tried but are dying to try is engineering some zoom balls and testing these out. Adding a little water would make these the perfect summer treat!
No summer engineering project is complete without trying to create a water wall with your kids! I am pretty sure the adults have just as much fun with this one!
Something about summer screams forts and clubhouses to me! What better way to encourage engineering practices than through a DIY fort building kit for kids!
Engineering doesn’t have to be hard. In fact, what if you and the kids engineered a simple pulley system this summer? Maybe it could bring you cold drinks from the cooler.
Pretty much every kid I know gets the munchies on summer break! I have the perfect cure… why not engineer an elaborate contraption to serve you goldfish right to your lap?
One of our favorite summer engineering projects is to design, build and test rocket designs in our backyard. If you are feeling extra explorative, you can take your designs to a nearby park and see just how far you can get your rockets to launch!
