Are your kids interested in robots? My daughter is determined that she can make one out of her tinker tray and circuit boards, which I am all for – this is how a love of engineering starts! I knew that a surprise robot nuts and bolts trail mix would be a special treat for her to discover in her lunch box.
How to Make a Nuts & Bolts Robot Trail Mix
First, gather your ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Multigrain Cheerios
- 1/2 cup cheese rings or cheese crackers
- 1/4 cup peanuts
- 1/2 cup pretzel sticks
- Silver food spray
- Candy eyes
- Silver dragoons
- Popcorn seasoning, optional
Now, there are grown-up party versions of “nuts and bolts mix” that involve cooking, worchestershire sauce, etc. While my daughter is an adventurous eater, I wanted something a bit quicker and easier.
If you wanted a bit more flavor, popcorn seasoning can be sprinkled overtop of the finished mix, or you can use nutritional yeast (my secret ingredient for making protein-packed popcorn).
Don’t be intimidated by the idea to “spray paint” the pretzel rods with food safe color – it is super simple and adds a fun touch to the trail mix.
Simply lay the pretzels on a baking sheet or some parchment paper and coat one side generously for a solid silver color. Allow to dry for about 10 minutes before turning over and coating completely.
Once the silver pretzel rods are dry, simply mix all of the ingredients together and serve!
This robot nuts & bolts trail mix will keep in a covered container for up to a month. Kids can enjoy the trail mix as-is, or try to create their own snack robots!
