We like using sugar scrubs for a variety of reasons – from gently exfoliating skin to delivering the wide-ranging benefits of essential oils. It’s one of the few gentle ways that I know how to remove stubborn paint or craft materials from my daughter’s hands without tears.
We keep a jar at all times in the bathtub and also on the sink – and they also make great homemade gifts! Last year, we made this delicious-smelling Pumpkin Pie Sugar Scrub so this year we thought we’d try another layered scrub with a yummy scent – Candy Corn!
How to Make a Candy Corn Sugar Scrub
First, gather your ingredients:
- 3 cups sugar
- 6 Tablespoons coconut oil
- Red and yellow food dye
- Dairy bottle-style container, or candy corn-shaped container if you can find one
- Spoon
- 3 small mixing bowls
- Candy corn, for garnish
- Sweet orange essential oil, optional
- Vanilla essential oil, optional
Start by making your preferred essential oil blend. We went with a citron-vanilla scent that is just delicious smelling and a nice break from the heavy spice scents that seem to dominate fall goodies. Of course, if you’d prefer a different scent, just switch that out.
Place 1 cup of sugar in each bowl, adding two tablespoons of coconut oil and a few drops of your essential oil blend.
Stir well to combine – you want the sugar to take on the appearance and texture of wet sand.
Stir in yellow food dye into one bowl (we used about 8 drops to achieve that vibrant hue) and yellow and red food dye into another. Leave one bowl plain.
Scoop the sugar scrubs into your container with the help of a funnel. You may need to shake the funnel a bit to encourage the sugar to slide down, as the coconut oil can cause it to clump a bit.
Layer the sugar scrubs with yellow at the bottom, followed by orange, and then finally white. If giving as a gift, top with a pretty fall-themed bow or gift tag.
