The moment my son gets money the requests start. “Mom, can we swing by the Target for that new robot?” “Mom, I want to go get the newest transformer..” “Mom, can we go get a new Lego set?” I mean, I try to teach him about spending his money wisely, but it still seems to just burn a hole in his pocket! I was totally overwhelmed teaching anything about money until I found this book, Make Your Kid a Money Genius (Even if You’re Not)! I’m so excited to be working with Beth Kobliner to share this awesome book and a brilliant shopping game to turn your kid into a money genius with all of you!
Beth’s book is brilliantly written and it really walks you through every concept of dealing with money at every age. Each chapter tackles a different money scenario and breaks it up into sections for preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, and college. Plus there are hands-on examples for each age range to really help kids understand such an abstract concept of money.
A Brilliant Shopping Game to Turn Your Kid Into a Money Genius
While the whole book had brilliant tips that I soaked up, like how to teach your kids to save, the value of hard work, and even how to save for college, I decided that I wanted to focus on helping my kids understand the importance of smart spending. Thankfully, chapter five is all about spending wisely!
One of our favorite activities was this brilliant shopping game to turn your kid into a money genius! See, this book is all about finding and taking advantage of the teaching moments in everyday life, and that’s exactly what we’re doing. The challenge is to go to the store with a set sum of money and make sure that what you purchase doesn’t go over the amount of money you have, even with sales tax!
So for our brilliant shopping game, we’re taking LegoMan to the grocery store with $20 and a mission to find a dessert for our whole family! He can choose whatever dessert he wants, cookies, cake, ice cream, or whatever his little heart desires, but the entire cost including sales tax has to be under the $10 he has to spend!
This fun and simple activity is teaching him practical money skills that he can use the rest of his life, and we’ll have a fun memory-making grocery trip together! For even more fun, I’m went live on my Lemon Lime Adventures Facebook Page to put this activity to the test! Be sure to watch our entire dessert adventure!
6 Simple Money Genius Tips for Shopping With Kids
Use cash all the time! It feels different to hand over cold hard cash than to swipe a card.
Be suspicious of sales, discounts, coupons and online vouchers. Oftentimes they don’t really save you any money!
Don’t trust your senses. Most money-saving tips go against what we would guess!
Don’t get anchored by high priced items that skew our perception of a good price. Know the good prices for your favorite items!
Dont shop to feel better. You’ll spend money you don’t need to spend, and you won’t actually feel better.
Dont shop with shopaholics. You’ll spend way too much trying to “keep up” with them!
