TAKE IT AWAY, Kara… SHARE YOUR AWESOME INTRO TO TOT-SCHOOL

First, what is “tot-school”? Is it formal education? Is it in a class setting or at home? Is it all day or just bits and pieces through the day?

Well… there is no right answer other than a tot-school is a means of engaging and teaching a toddler while exposing them to a unique and diverse world. So while learning numbers and their ABCs is certainly and aspect of this and essential to their education, it’s also about allowing them to explore the special, the unique, and the exciting.

Tot-school is helping a child develop context to their world and enjoy learning rather than it be mundane and uninspiring.

So how do we personally tot-school?

Currently we are working through weekly themes that we started at the beginning of the calendar year and we do a little bit every day. This can be five minutes here and there or it can mean going on a big “field trip”. In the end, we are exploring basic concepts and putting them in real-world context.

As an educator, I developed our weekly theme list so that it had a flow to it and so that we could continue to revisit old concepts to reinforce learning. As the new calendar year approaches and my daughter is getting older, we are going to be moving into monthly themes so we can dig deeper and she can get a more comprehensive grasp of the topics we cover.

To find our weekly themes, download a free theme chart and even a free planning calender, and to see what themes we have completed thus far check out the Weekly Learning Theme landing page. AND if you are wanting to get started or enhance what you are already doing, be sure to look into my eBook with 19 other contributors all giving ideas, insights, and lessons in how Every Parent Can Teach their Toddler.

Great learning ideas! I did tot school with my oldest when the 1+1+1=1 blog did a weekly link-up (I think she still does, although her own children have out grown it) I’m now hoping to start it up again with my youngest. Thanks for sharing.
