As I mentioned before, we have been in love with our new essential oils. After wanting to try them for quite some time because of the benefits for children with sensory needs, we finally jumped on board. This week we have been exploring the scents and the effects of each oil. In doing so, we found two that we just love. The first oil we have found incredibly handy is our new lemon essential oil.  After just 30 minutes of diffusing this oil each morning, the whole family is energized and ready to start the day.

{Okay, so a side tip… if you have a sensory seeking kiddo, you might not want to start their day with lemon oils, we learned the hard way… but the rest of the family loved this boost of energy}.

We have been in full crafting and creating mode lately, and have been adding our oils to everything from scented salt dough to homemade worry stones (more on those later). So it only seemed fitting to make sugar scrub, too.

Making Energizing Sugar Scrub with Kids

It is surprising just how simple this is to make. So simple in fact that we made two scrub recipes in one day, energizing and calming. The process is only 3 steps and any child can do this activity from preschool to upper grades. The younger children might need a tad bit of help with the measuring and pouring, but honestly any age child can do this. Simply pour all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix until the sugar is completely and evenly coated.

Voila. You have sugar scrub.

As a final step, we poured our sugar scrub into a mason jar and added a few lemon zest sprigs to add some texture and color to our scrub. You could skip this step if you do not have lemons.  Now you are ready to make your gift jars.

Creating “Rise and Shine” Sugar Scrub Gift Jars

We have a lot of mason jars left over from our upcycled wedding. We use them for pretty much any activity we do and they are pretty common in our house. Although we used medium sized jars, you could definitely use smaller jars and have your scrub stretch for more gifts. This recipe made one medium sized jar.

Step one. Making the Lids

Personilized Sugar Scrub Gifts Made By Kids

No matter what size jar you use, you can have your children trace the inside of the lid on the back of the scrapbook paper. We were able to get 6-8 lid templates per paper. If you are a fancy crafter you could use circle cutters, but we aren’t fancy like that.

Once your child has traced and cut the circles, just place the paper in top of the mason jar lid and close the jar. Complete your project with a wrap of twine around the jar and an optional label. Since the kids made these, there are no fancy bows but I think it looks really cute without the bows.

See, its easy, right? Doesn’t it make you want to go make some right now, or schedule it soon? I know the boys are already asking to make more!

How long does the sugar scrub keep before it goes bad?

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

It lasts for a very long time, especially if you don’t add the lemon rind.

  7. This sounds so wonderful. Does anyone know how to store it and how long it will keep for? Thx for any information 🙂

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

We have ours stored in a mason jar and has lasted over a year.

  11. Does adding the lemon zest reduce the shelf life of this scrub? Also, is it alright to leave it out or do you need to put it in the fridge?

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

The lemon zest does reduce the shelf life a tad. We left ours out, but I would guess it might stay nice and bright if you put it in the fridge.

Did you use fractioned coconut oil (the liquid kind) or just regular coconut oil that hardens?

    1. Lemon Lime Adventures

      Fractionated 🙂
