Some might say I am a tad addicted to trail mix recipes. There is just something about throwing a ton of goodies in a bowl and creating something awesome for the whole family. We love getting outdoors and going for a hike every 4th of July, so this Red, White & Blue 4th of July Trail Mix will be the perfect snack to keep us going when we get a bit hungry on the trails.

While there is a bit of candy in this trail mix thanks to those patriotic M&Ms, the rest of the mix is kept very healthy and energizing so you can enjoy a bit of chocolate while also getting some great on-the-go nutrition.
When making a great trail mix, there is a lot of room for creativity but you want to be sure to pick ingredients that will travel well and pack a lot of nutrition in each bite. Nuts and seeds are great protein sources and can last for weeks in container or ziplock bag without spoiling – unlike some other healthy treats that are a little less travel-friendly!
How to Make a 4th of July Trail Mix
First, gather your ingredients:
- 1/4 cup roasted sunflower seeds
- 1/2 cup sultana raisins
- 1/4 cup roasted peanuts
- 1/4 cup raw pumpkin seeds
- 1/4 cup raw almonds
- 1/4 cup roasted cashews
- 1/2 cup M&Ms in red, white and blue (you can buy the special edition M&Ms
on sale right now)
Of course, you can swap out any of these ingredients for ones that you prefer, but keep that ratio of healthy ingredients to treat mix-ins and try to pick nutrient-dense ingredients that will keep you fuller longer.
Simply mix all of these ingredients together and adjust the quantities as you see fit. I like a good amount of raisins in my trail mix, but they pack some hidden sugar so with the addition of the M&Ms I tried to keep that in mind.
We also made some healthy trail mix energy bites with this trail mix combination which are a bit messier for a hike, but perfect for a picnic.
How does your family like to celebrate 4th of July? I’d love to hear all about it!
