We love making homemade sugar scrub recipes with the kids as a unique homemade gift. In fact, the recipes are so versatile, we’ve decided to give the recipe a try using another invigorating scent. This Cinnamon Sugar Scrub with Essential Oils is a complete luxury in the mornings.
We’ve previously made Pumpkin Pie Sugar Scrub and a Gingerbread Sugar Scrub with real spices, but I loved the idea to use essential oils in the recipes!
Sugar scrubs are a great natural exfoliant – providing both a gentle physical abrasive and an enzyme reaction that helps dissolve dead skin cells – and adding in essential oils is awesome because you get the added benefits specific to that oil. The primary benefits of including cinnamon essential oil in this recipe are alertness (great for perking up in the morning) and increasing blood circulation, improving skin health and reducing pain.
How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Scrub with Essential Oils
First, gather your materials for your cinnamon sugar scrub:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup coconut oil (you can use olive or almond instead)
- 4 drops Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil (check out the Young Living Starter Kit)
- Extra cinnamon (purely for a scent boost), optional
- Water-soluble food dye, optional
- Small glass containers
- Cinnamon sticks, for gifting
- Homemade labels and ribbon, for gifting
We kept the cinnamon essential oil to a lower amount because it can be a skin irritant in large quantities, so we added an extra sprinkle of ground cinnamon to help the scent along.
Start out with removing any lumps from your coconut oil, if using. I heated ours gently in the microwave and then my daughter helped stir out the remaining lumps. This just helps create a more consistent scrub later – which isn’t too important if it’s for personal use, but it’s a nice step if your Cinnamon Sugar Scrub will be a gift.
Next, we added the oil and sugar to a large bowl and stirred to combine. I like to provide a large container when the kids mix so they can focus on just incorporating the ingredients without worrying about anything spilling over the sides. A nice heavy bowl helps if they forget to hold onto the bowl while stirring, making the process less frustrating.
I did the next step because I don’t allow my daughter to handle essential oils – we treat them like medicine in our home. I added just four drops to this batch, but if you know your skin can handle more feel free to add up to 8 drops for a great scent.
Mix the oil into the sugar mixture thoroughly and then add the optional colouring and ground cinnamon, if desired.
Measure out your cinnamon sugar scrub into containers and decorate as desired. If I’m making it for personal use, I just add a white sticker label and have my daughter decorate it. For this batch we were giving our Cinnamon Sugar Scrub to grandparents, so we printed out some labels and tied them onto the jars with some twine along with a cinnamon stick for fun!
What type of sugar scrub would you like to wake up to in the mornings? Would your kids love making this as a fun homemade gift?
