We love making sugar scrubs as homemade gifts. They are super easy for kids to make and can be customized in so many different ways! I love my lemon poppy seed “muffin” and coffee sugar scrubs – while the essential oil sugar scrubs that we have gifted are always raved about (and specially requested) by our friends.
How To Make Rainbow Sugar Scrub
First, gather your materials:
- Happiness blend (Shared below)
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- Food dye
(red, yellow, blue)
- Mason Jar
(half pint if making one)
- Decorative ribbon, etc, optional
You can customize the scent of this rainbow sugar scrub to suit your own needs and preferences – we decided to blend some of our essential oils together to make a happiness blend – because who doesn’t think “happiness” when they think of rainbows?!
Happiness Essential Oils Blend:
- 50 drops Lavender
- 35 drops Valor
- 30 drops Stress Away
- 15 drops Patchouli
- 15 drops Vetiver

Add this mixture to the coconut oil.
Simply mix the essential oils, coconut oil, and sugar together in a large bowl. You want a crumbly texture that is somewhat dry to the touch, but sticks together in little clumps. If your mixture is too wet, add a bit of extra sugar. If it is too dry, add a bit of extra coconut oil.
Scoop out two large spoonfuls of the oil-sugar mixture into a second, smaller bowl and add one drop of red food dye and one drop of blue. Stir it together to achieve a vibrant violet hue, and then scoop into the bottom of your mason jar. Smoosh it down with your fingers or the spoon.
Wipe out the small bowl and repeat the dyeing process with two drops of blue food dye. You are essentially dying two spoonfuls of the sugar in each color of the rainbow – in reverse rainbow order.
You can add on additional embellishments to customize the mason jar, as desired. It’s also a good idea to add a small tag or note clarifying which essential oils are in the mixture, especially if you are gifting it.
This homemade rainbow sugar scrub is a gorgeous gift that any lucky recipient would love! I love seeing it on my bathroom counter every morning and enjoy using it even more!
