WHAT IS SCENTED SALT DOUGH?

Simply put, SCENTED SALT DOUGH is…  any salt-dough that is primarily is smells delicious.

According to popular recipes and pictures found on Pinterest, you might describe Scented Salt Dough as:

Moldable

Hardening

Versatile

Aromatic

Almost all of the recipes are the same, with a few changes for color, texture or scents. As you will read from my co-hosts, there are a few variations and differing opinions as to the proportions, temperatures and how to make it. Let’s find out more about it!

WHAT SHOULD SALT DOUGH LOOK {AND SMELL} LIKE?

What is Scented Salt Dough

According to my good friends at Imagination Tree, Fun at Home with Kids, and Sugar Aunts,  Scented Salt Dough should be moldable and pliable, while having the addition of a desirable aroma. It should harden if left out  in the air or baked in the oven, creating a long lasting keepsake.

If you click through you will read the ingredients vary, as do the methods to accomplish the preservation. But one thing is consistent across all the recipes…

The Smell Amazing

So we set out to find our favorite SCENTED SALT DOUGH RECIPE and learn the science behind it!

WHAT EXPERIMENT DID WE DO WITH SALT DOUGH?

If you are a regular here, you know that we have explored scented doughs before in this series. We did an experiment with a variety of scents to match and guess the scent. We made scented cloud dough, and we even experimented withe the best salt dough recipe. So as our final experiment in this year’s series, we have decided to explore our new essential oils and the aromatherapy behind the scents. Since we have been using our oils to help our family live a calmer and more peaceful life, we wanted to test the theory that some oils or scents can actually be energizing.

How to make Scented Salt Dough

Simple Salt Dough Recipe

4-5 drops of Essential Oils(for this experiment we used Peppermint)

Washable Tempera Paint (optional)

However, as a teaser I will tell you we also made something pretty awesome with several of the scents. Each scent has  different purpose and a different benefit. Or at least that is what we wanted to test.

Just like traditional salt dough, you want to mix the ingredients together until they are mixed well. Once everything is mixed, make a well in the dough and drop the oils into the hole.

Knead the dough until the oils are worked in completely. Kneading, rolling, and mixing the thick salt dough is incredibly good proprioceptive work which is organizing and energizing on its own. Yet another reason this dough is a win win.

If you would like your dough colored, now is the time to add in some paint, liquid watercolors, or food coloring. We decided to add a tad bit of rf, since we were testing the energizing nature of peppermint.

Immediately our house smelled of peppermint and we were able to notice our moods picking up.

Whether you are wanting a scented dough for the holidays or you are wanting a scented dough that could give you a boost, this dough could be fun and helpful to you! In the meantime, enjoy the aroma and make something fun with your kids.

Who could resist making what you and I have probably been thinking about this whole time. Yep, you guessed it… Peppermint Salt dough. And if you have a batch of peppermint salt dough, you will surely want to make some candy cane ornaments? Right?

That is exactly what my boys did. Now here things got a bit tricky. You can’t tell from the image here, but the dough was bumpy and bubbly. Once it cooked it made the most gorgeous pattern on the dough. I have not included a close up, because I can’t tell you how we did the texture. I wish we could. In fact, we tested the doughs with oils without oils, different trying times, different ratios of salt vs. water. Nothing came up with the answer. It was frustrating to say the least.

WERE WE SUCCESSFUL AT MAKING SCENTED SALT DOUGH?

Normally, we have these elaborate science experiments and we explore specific questions. However this month, we simply experimented with a variety of scents that can be added to the doughs. While there is no substantial evidence, I can say that my children loved making the scented dough and made about 5 batches.
