If there is one Christmas craft that my kids go bananas over, it is simple homemade ornaments. I think this season we have made a total of 1 Million ornaments. Okay, maybe not a million, but you get the idea. My kids like making homemade ornaments. One of the absolute favorite kind of ornament to make right now is salt dough. We have made scented salt dough, salt dough using different temperatures, clay dough and our new favorite, this super simple 1 ingredient modeling dough. These simple thumbprint ornaments might just be the easiest ornaments I’ve ever made.
If you are a regular here, you know just how much I don’t do crafts. I am much more likely to do process art, or a creative project before I will set out a cookie cutter craft for the kids to do. However, my kids LOVE crafts. So much so, that I try to give them some simple crafts to try as often as I can. When I look for a craft to share with the kids, I look for something that will encourage them to follow 3-5 step directions, communicate their needs, and express their creativity.
This is incredibly helpful for my son who struggles with sensory processing, motor planning, and working memory. These simple ornaments took less than 5 minutes to make and were great for developing fine motor skills, while providing the proprioceptive input through the clay.
