Have you ever traveled for a long period of time with busy kids in the back seat? No, scratch that. Have you ever spent any time traveling with kids in the backseat? It can be incredibly long and grueling, if you let it. However, if you prepare ahead of time, you can really have a great time. This super simple travel snack kit is perfect for road trips with busy kids. I wasn’t sure I was a believer until I tested it out with my own busy family on two 12 hour car drives. You might be thinking, yeah, yeah, this is cool, but there is no way this is going to tame my kids on a long trip. I thought the same thing too. I promise you, this works! If you are anything like me, turning around 15 million times starts to get really old on the 15 millionth and first time. For me, it is more than I can handle, so I had to come up with a better solution. This road trip hack is the perfect solution to long road trips with busy kids. Traveling with a huge range of kids (toddler to preteen) I can tell you it really does work.
Simple Travel Snack Kit Hack
What You Need: Divided Craft Container ( I loved this one because each of the blue bins could be washed individually) Your Busy Kids’s Favorite Snacks (My kids love their FLIPZ® )
- FLIPZ® Milk Chocolate Covered Pretzels
- Fish Snacks
- Dried Bananas
Miniature Sandwiches (We Made Some PB&Js) Fun Paper Napkins Setting up this hack is so super simple, you will be surprised how quickly you fill it up. In fact, we are packing right now for a 16 hour drive in a few days and I just set this up again this afternoon. My 11 year old was so excited when he saw me pull out the snack kits. Once you have all your snack gathered, you are ready to go. This should take about 5 minutes to put together and will save you hours in the long car ride! In each compartment, fill with each of your child’s favorite snacks. We love to have a mixture of crunchy, chewy, and salty, and sweet. However, I don’t like to give my kids super sweet snacks, especially on a long car ride. That’s why we love FLIPZ® Milk Chocolate Covered Pretzels. They are the perfect addition to any snack kit for road trips. I am not going to lie, FLIPZ® Milk Chocolate Covered Pretzels hit the spot after long hours in the car for me too. Next, cut up a few of your kiddo’s favorite sandwiches and add them to your kit. Now, you have a complete meal, everything you need is in this complete kit. Finally, it is time to personalize the kit with your child’s name. We used a sharpie marker to make our kit special just for our daughter and two boys. You can put your family name, or just have your child decorate the kit with their favorite stickers. The sky is the limit. If your toddler is anything like mine, she will be super excited to help you put this together and even happier to enjoy it on the long car ride! And if your preteens are anything like mine, they could pretend they could care less. Don’t dismiss them in this process. I promise this kit will be a life saver about an hour into the trip. Time to pack the car. Along with all your other road trip necessities, this is one of the easiest items you will pack! In fact, you might have trouble keeping little fingers out of it before the road trip ever begins. Can you guess what my toddler went for first? She went right for the FLIPZ® Milk Chocolate Covered Pretzels. She just had to have a sneak taste. This face is worth any sneak she might have done. Isn’t she adorable? Once the kit is made, it’s finally time to get on the road! Trust me when I tell you that you will not regret having this hack in your car on this road trip. The best thing about this road trip hack is that this snack kit fits right in your kids’ laps and makes it a self serving station. Guess what that means? You don’t have to turn around as much! YAY! With a kit they can easily pass between all the kids or individual ones, tattling and bickering was reduced to a minimum. My eleven year old could not keep his fingers out of the snack kit. I never thought my kids would use the kit as much as they did. They loved everything about it! My toddler felt like she was so independent and she was in charge of her own decisions. My older boys loved it too. They loved that they got to choose their snacks and it was just for them. Because they could see all the options in one place, I did’t have to go through the “what do we have” list every five seconds. Not only will your kids love this in the car, you will find yourself and your family using it more than you think you might. For us, we went to visit family in Arkansas and ended up using this road trip hack for the entire weekend when we went to the pool, went on the boat, and went on small road trips. And now we are using it at the beach!

Where did you buy the container? Thanks!
I think I’m going to use this idea for our impending 30hr plane journey. Thank you!
Where did you get the craft kit? Did the blue containers come with it?
We got it at Target. The blue containers were part of it.

I love this, and I am totally going to use this idea. With 4 kids from teen to toddler, it’s nice to be able to give each one something just for them. And, I totally agree, having to turn around a million times, or answer “what snacks do we have?” gets old quick! Thanks for sharing this idea!
