What Did We Do Today: Day 16

What do we do in homeschool all day?

Our Guide to Daily Lesson Plans, Activities, and Resources

Every day I will post our lesson plans of what we plan to do in homeschool and each night I hope to update how the day went.  Some days the update may be brief and other days I might give you some sneak peaks into great fun we had. My goal is to use this part of the blog as a place to document our learning and hopefully provide resources for other homeschooling parents.

Hope to get accomplished:IMG_4955

  • Continue the Deschooling process
  • Advent Calendar: (three activities) I keep getting behind!
    • Salt Dough Ornaments
    • Shaving Cream Fun
    • Stay up Late
  • Writing:
    • Write a letter to the Elf
  • Reading
    • Legoman: Chapter 6 of Bunnicula
      • Word work in Shaving Cream
    • Bones Read more Scruffy
      • Word Work in Shaving Cream
    • Read to both boys
  • Online Learning Time
    • IXL (math practice)
  • Science
    • Snow Explorations
    • Marble Run Trials
  • Project work
    • Bones: Hat Project

I think the projects might get tossed…. do you ever do that? Start something with your kids and they lose interest before you finish? How do you handle that?

Notes for today:

  • Transition day from Mr. X, He has been dropping them off around 11, making getting things done in a timely manner difficult. What time will he come today? 10:30

Reflections on today

Today was a great day! The boys arrived around 10:30 ready to work, which never happens. We have a “today’s to do” ritual we do before starting any day. We do this mostly for Legoman, so he can plan his day and limit melt-downs, but we also do it to keep on track. I have gotten in the habit of saying, “what are you going to do now/next/when you finish…etc” I find this keeps the boys moving through the day.

Today was exciting because of the shaving cream fun. I set up some stations (I can’t wait to tell you more about them) and they worked for hours… switching through math, science, word work, and free play (fine motor). It was great!

Moods today were difficult. They always are on transition days. I would love tips and pointers from anyone else that lives as a blended family. The break in our family life and return is just so hard and completely disrupts our natural flow. But I digress, today was a good day.

Today’s actual advent activity was to stay up late. I was nervous this might end in sheer terror, but to my amazement the boys were delightful. I might pay for this tomorrow.

Have you checked out Elf’s adventures yet?

Im just wondering, since you are homeschooling on your days what do the boys do on days with their dad? Im assuming he works, so do they go to school (that would be difficult) or do they go to like a daycare? How does that affect their homeschooling time with you? Do you feel that because they are not technically going to school 5 days a week that they will be way behind in what other kids their age are learning or can do?

We utilize the boys dad time as “the weekend” the freedom in homeschooling allows us to move the week around and still get in the 5 days a week. Their father has a nontypical work schedule as well. In regards to time management, there is a 2:1 teacher/student ratio in our school, in a brick and mortar there would be a 30:1 ratio. This allows for much greater individualized attention and much more efficient learning!
