Having fun with the family doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. In fact, summer can be a great time to connect your children and build bonds that will last a lifetime. I hope you enjoy our family’s top ten ideas for simple family fun!

1.Family Game Night

We love family game night around here. We love to gather around the table, pop some fresh popcorn and make homemade sodas while we laugh, learn and play together. We love a good game of Suspend when we are in the mood for some tricky fun that tests our nerves and skills. Looking for something for the whole family… try one of these fun press and spin games. We have made this a weekly tradition on Friday nights. In the summer, try taking game night outdoors.

2. Pool Fun

Why not plan a day at the pool for lots of swimming games with the family? Its a great chance to cool off and build those connections as you play Marco Polo, a game of catch, or a fun look and find game with these exciting turtles. We just recently got an underwater camera, which has made pool fun even more entertaining. You should see the faces kids make underwater!

3. Nature Scavenger Hunt

One of our favorite things to do during the Summer is to get in touch with nature. Sometimes this means a family hike, a day at the forest preserves or a simple nature scavenger hunt. This Summer, my boys can’t stop collecting bugs and observing them in their bug collection kits. Whatever the case is, we have so much fun together as a family discovering new things, talking about what we find and build memories of summer fun.

4. Collaborative Paintings

Gather up the paintbrushes, the easels and paint and head outdoors for a family painting session. We love to painting with bubble wrap and rocks but you can use almost anything from nature or around the house. Painting together will ignite your family’s creativity and allow you to each share in the joy and process of creating in the summer sun.

5 .Backyard Campout

I know it sounds crazy… camping out in your own backyard, right? Last summer, this was one of my favorite memories. All of us, including Super B (who was 2 months old) crammed into a tent right in between our porch and our garage. The boys loved sleeping in their sleeping bags, using their flashlights after the sun went down and being snuggled in close with the family. Camping with kids is the perfect way to incorporate games, conversations, and family bonding into your summer family fun. For some added summer learning, try studying the constellations and the night sky.

6. Field Day

Pack up your bags with your favorite balls, hula hoops, tunnels and outdoor games and head to the park. Plan a day of picnics in the back of your car and relay races galore. Worried about it being a hot day? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with this list of 7 activities you can do with just one bag of ice!

7. I Scream You Scream | Ice Cream Shop

What could be more fun than setting up a pretend ice cream shop in your backyard? Using this simple ice cream playdough recipe and some fun scoops and bowls, the pretend play can last for hours… and never melt! The last time we did this, the boys made banana splits, smoothies, and ice cream sundaes for everyone to “enjoy” together.

8 .Lemonade Stand

Summer is a great time to work together as a family to raise money for your favorite causes. I love the idea of collaborating and planning to serve others. You could use this amazing lemonade stand that could be used for so many pretend play experiences, or make your own out of pallets. Either way, a lemonade stand is the perfect way to have some summer family fun while growing together!

9. Garden Time

I love summer gardening with my kids! The weeding, the watering, and best of all… the harvesting. My kids love to get out their favorite garden gear, crouch down at the garden with me, and dig away. The conversations and memories involved in this summer fun continue to build bonds in our family. For some added summer fun and learning, try cooking up a fun recipe together made just with your delicious harvest.

10. Staycations and Vacations

Traveling with kids over the summer can be extremely rewarding. From experiencing new places to visiting old favorites, traveling definitely provides lots of opportunities for family fun! Have a tight budget this year? Do what we do… take a staycation in your very own town and live like a tourist for a day. Don’t for get to pack your travel games and plan some time for family time while you are away from home.
